From experience with clients and in my own life, these items are typically safe from ROLG (regret of letting go). So grab your donation bag, and a trash bag, and watch your space become lighter!
- Anything in your house that is rotting
- The vase that came with gifted flowers
- Excess plastic bags (probably found wadded up under the sink, or inside other plastic bags)
- Dried up rubber bands
- Expired jam/mustard/specialty topping that sounded good at one point but not anymore
- Whatever item is at the very bottom of your freezer
- The plastic takeout container that is *almost* helpful as food storage
- The branded water bottle you got in a swag bag
- Hotel toiletries from 5+ years ago
- Skincare / makeup you don’t like (why did I keep a mascara that made my eyes burn every time I used it for so long?? learn from my mistakes please!)
- Expired sunscreen (or sunscreen that makes your skin burn – again, learn from my mistakes!)
- Hair products you haven’t used in 2 years
- Perfume samples
- Hair ties that are stretched out beyond use
- Chapstick that has promotional branding
- First aid supplies that expired or lost use a long time ago (a bandaid with no stick is worse than no bandaid in my opinion)
- Socks that no longer have any elastic
- Underwear that no longer has any elastic
- Costume jewelry you got in high school
- Worn out sleep mask
- Book you gifted or bought out of obligation
- Belts that don’t fit or are cracked
- Dried out pens or dull pencils
- The printout someone gave you to read 5 years ago
- Duct tape that is no longer adhesive to anything but itself
- Another families Christmas card from 2007
- Receipts from purchases made more than a year ago
- Ads that came in the mail
- Rusty nails, or extra parts that came with ikea furniture you assembled 10 years ago
- Extra ethernet cords (seems like these came with every router, and everyone now owns at least 15)
- Screenshots on your phone you don’t even remember taking
- Apps you haven’t used or opened in years
- Promotional emails (bonus if you unsubscribe from a few!)
- “Time to check-in” emails from hotels or flights
- The 3rd and 4th and 5th photos you took of the same sunset
